PC Game review - Q.U.B.E. review

Q.U.B.E. (Quick Understanding of Block Extrusion) is a 3D puzzle game made in the Unreal Engine 3 by Toxic Games. Q.U.B.E.'s gameplay is very similar to P0rtal (Valve Software), in the sense that in both you are trapped in featureless rooms and are forced to complete puzzles for your freedom. Q.U.B.E. has no narration however, and you are just left to your own devices to solve these puzzles. They always involve cubes, as the name suggests, and each colour cube does a different thing, such as yellow that makes a staircase, red that extends out of the wall or floor, blue that flings you high up in the air, and even purple that flips the world upside down and sideways. Using these cubes to get you (or a green cube, energy ball or even a laser/light-beam towards the end of the game) to the end of the level is the challenge. Since there is no tutorial or narration of any kind, you are placed into very easy tests at first for you to discover what each cube does by yourself. This type of gameplay is intuitive & ground-breaking, and I hope to see it in future games. Another interesting thing about it is that you have no special equipment that you have to hold or upgrade, just the pair of gloves that you are wearing.
An example of a fairly basic puzzle in which you must get the green cube to the exit. |
Q.U.B.E.'s graphics are mind-blowing for an indie dev, and are definitely at today's standards in graphic design. It has a level of cuteness and cartoonish delight, while still looking like a damn fine game. Q.U.B.E.'s music & sound is also fantastic. As you fly through the air little sounds start to play, and the music adjusts itself for each situation. It really feels like a dynamic experience, as if you had your own personal DJ sitting behind you. Q.U.B.E.'s level design is really quite great, as each room feels different to the last. The difficulty slowly ramps up the further you go, and each new element introduced has an easy puzzle or two to let the player familiarize themselves with it. Q.U.B.E. is extremely fun, but quite challenging at times - and you may find yourself rage-quitting on occasion. A level editor would be nice - or even just some more puzzles from Toxic Games, as the game is quite short.
Gameplay 10/10
Great gameplay that is fun the whole way through.
Graphics 10/10
Great graphics for an indie title, or even a AAA one!
Sound 10/10
The music is great and the sound effects are better!
Fun 9/10
Great fun to play - until it gets too hard that is.
Campaign 8/10
Nice levels, but some are hard to the point of virtual impossibility. Bit short too.
Replayability 5/10
I wouldn't play this again but some people might.
Multiplayer 0/10
No multiplayer, but it would be a nice touch. Maybe in Q.U.B.E. 2!
Control Scheme 10/10
With only 7 buttons, it is amazingly simple.
Originality 6/10
Definitely not the first of its genre. *cough, cough* P0rtal! *cough*
Extras 0/10
No extras.
Overall score: 68/100
You can buy Q.U.B.E. on Steam, Desura, GamersGate, or Playism.

PC Game review - Trials 2: Second Edition review

To celebrate the recent release of Trials: Evolution on XBLA, I thought I'd review the PC entry in the franchise, Trials 2: Second Edition.
Trials 2: Second Edition is an excellent stunt game that needs just a tad more variety.
Trials 2: Second Edition is a 2D stunting/racing game originally made in Adobe Flash by Redlynx Entertainment. Trials 2: Second Edition's graphics are definitely below average, but considering it's release date & it's gameplay style, it doesn't even matter.
Trials 2: Second Edition's music & sound is nice at first, but after playing for a while that constant buzzing of your motorbike's engine just gets extremely annoying, and I just ended up playing this while listening to my own music.
Trials 2: Second Edition's level design is really quite great, as each individual jump feels hand-crafted to perfection. It is an extremely hard game though, and I often found myself screaming or rage-quitting (and no other game does this to me, except for Half-Life 2: Deathmatch with my family). As for the action, it's really quite simple. There are only three controls, forward/backward, lean left/right, & bail. It was very funny do a jump/spin combo and baily mid-air - oh so funny! I often just crashed deliberately because of the beautiful physics engine. Although it is fun to do this, sometimes when crashing, or even just driving for that matter, it glitches and you bike turns into what looks like a demented wheelchair. Overall its a great game though. But the one thing that they definitely could've done better, is more levels, more gameplay modes, more customisation, and a level editor for an easier way to get more maps.
Now, for the scoring.
Now, for the scoring.
Gameplay 8.5/10
Apart from the occasional glitch, this is great to play!
Graphics 6/10
Not up to par, but good enough for a bike game.
Sound 4/10
The music is ok, but the effects are so annoying!!
Fun 8.5/10
Great fun to play - until it gets too hard that is.
Campaign 8.5/10
Nice levels, but some are hard to the point of virtual impossibility.
Replayability 8.5/10
With so many failed attempts, you'll definitely want to try again.
Multiplayer 2/10
No built-in multiplayer, but you can compare times with friends.
Control Scheme 10/10
Simple but effective.
Originality 6/10
Definitely not the first bike game, but one of the best.
Extras 2/10
No extras, but there are a few more gameplay modes.
Overall score: 64/100

PC Game review - Half-Life 2 review.

The other day I said I would be reviewing various Valve games (as they are awesome) and today I'm reviewing Half-Life 2. This review also applies to the standalone expansion packs, Episode 1 & Episode 2, as they are very similar.
Half-Life 2 is a great follow-up to one of the best shooters you could ever play, especially with all the mods.
Half-Life 2 is an excellent sequel to one of the best shooters ever made.
Half-Life 2 is a first person shooter built in the Source engine by Valve Software. It is so good - even better than the first! Half-Life 2's graphics definitely beat the first's, and are very good, but still not quite up to today's standards. Half-Life 2 has even better music than the first. It is dynamic, so if you begin a fire-fight it puts on action music, or if you start a puzzle it puts on thinking music, et cetera. Half-Life 2's campaign is an even better and more original story-line with even better pacing.
The G-Man, a creepy-looking guy in a suit takes you out of Black Mesa and redeploys him in City 17 - a city controlled by the Combine, an alien race that also invaded Earth due to the Black Mesa incident. The citizens rise up against them, et cetera. As for the action, Half-Life 2 has really good controls, and excellent puzzles and fights, with many ways to complete them. It also dripfeeds details about the game world, the history of Black Mesa & new weapons and enemies - like the first game. The levels dynamically change to suit these new additions to the game, so no 2 levels are the same. Also, there is an excellent modding community, so the fun must go on! But what makes this game so good is the gravity gun. You can pick things up and throw them!!!
Now, for the scoring.
The G-Man in Half-Life & Half-Life 2 |
Now, for the scoring.
Gameplay 10/10
One of the best shooters out there!
Graphics 6/10
Very good, but not up to par.
Sound 10/10
The music, voice acting & sound effects are very good.
Fun 10/10
The dynamics of this game make it really, really fun.
Campaign 10/10
Interesting storyline and fun levels make a great campaign.
Replayability 10/10
I've played it twice through now and all the different mods are great.
Multiplayer 7/10
No built-in multiplayer, but there is Half-Life 2 Deathmatch.
Control Scheme 10/10
Simple but effective.
Originality 8/10
I like the idea of not 1 but 2 alien races invading..
Extras 2/10
No extras, but theres a great modding community.
Overall score: 83/100
