PC Game review - Half-Life review.

The other day I said I would be reviewing various Valve games (as they are awesome) and today I start off with Half-Life. Its a classic for a reason! Also, this review also applies to the expansion packs Blue-Shift & Opposing Force, as they are very similar.

Half-Life is one of, if not THE best shooter out there. Its definitely a must-play.

Half-Life is a first person shooter built in the Quake engine by Valve Software. It is such a perfect game!  Half-Life hasn't got the best graphics by today's standards, but I still enjoyed it and it was top-notch back in the day.  Half-Life has some of the best music in a video game I've ever heard. It fits in with whatever the situation is in and always seems to match your mood. Half-Life's campaign has such an interesting story-line with great pacing. Its not the most original (alien invasion, gotta save mankind, yada yada yada.) but it is interesting.

The G-Man in Half-Life & Half-Life 2

The G-Man, a creepy-looking guy in a suit gives a test subject to Black Mesa which then fails catastrophically and creates a portal to Xen, an alien planet where dangerous creatures live. They enter the facility and the military is dispatched to destroy them. As for the action, Half-Life has really good controls, and really good puzzles and fights. It slowly dripfeeds details about the game world, the history of Black Mesa & new weapons and enemies. The levels dynamically change to suit these new additions to the game, so no 2 levels are the same. Also, there is an excellent modding community, so the fun must go on!

Not great these days but still good nonetheless.

The music, voice acting & sound effects are very good.

The dynamics of this game make it really, really fun.

Campaign             10/10

Interesting storyline and fun levels make a great campaign.

Replayability        10/10

I've played it thrice through now and all the different mods are great.

Multiplayer          4/10

Built-in multiplayer sucks but all the mods make up for it.

Control Scheme   10/10

Simple but effective.

Originality            5/10

Over-used storyline but it pulls it off excellently.

Extras                   2/10

No extras, but theres a great modding community.

Overall score: 77/100

 Half-Life is one of the best shooters you could ever play, especially with all the mods.
